"Work hard, aim high, share and care"

In May 2008 I spent a week visiting a variety of school settings in Norway as part of ECOTEC’s Transversal Programme. The focus of this particular study visit was the examination of different school systems. Along with 14 other school leadership colleagues from across Europe I gained an insight into the way in which educational provision is organised not just within the host country but within all the other settings represented. The opportunity gave me the chance to reflect on current practice, particularly with regards to self evaluation processes, and to expand my own thinking.

As well as challenging a number of well established opinions, the experience also afforded me the chance to confirm some core beliefs with regards to best practice in learning provision.

The fact that all of this was explored against the backdrop of some of the finest scenery proved an added bonus! This was a hugely successful visit which I was grateful to have been part of. The experience is one I shall remember and reflect upon for a long time to come.

Mrs Hanson returned to school this week follwoing her visit to Poland. While she was there, Mrs Hanson helped to put together a bid for project funding with a number of other schools from all around Europe. If successful, we will focus on finding out more about 'Water' in relation to its sustainable  use. Mrs Hanson also had time to visit different schools and she has brought back lots of interesting ideas to share with us.

We have enjoyed the company of some vistors from Norway. Mrs Davies made the link with the schools they represent during her study vist there last May. Since then, we have set up links with these schools and so it was good to be able to meet hem in person. Mrs Davies has put them in touch with Penyrheol School in order for them to work together on a Comenius project, like the one Mrs Hanson put together on her visit to Poland.

We enjoyed the company of Vincent today, a student from France who has spent the day with us helping us find out a little more about the French language and culture.

Our bid to be part of a delegation of headteachers from all over the UK to China in May, has been successful. Mrs Davies will travel with a representative from Gowerton School to join this exciting visit which offers our pupils such promising opportunities.

A partnership will be established with a primary school within the state of Chongqing. One of the plans resulting from this opportunity involves the introduction of Mandarin Chinese to our pupils. Pupils will also establish internet partnerships with children in Chongqing which will allow us to begin to share someting of each others culture. Chongqing is a port city like Swansea (although much larger - the munincipality has a population of 32 million!!), and also like Swansea, it has undergone considerable change and development in response to heavy war time bombing.

This partnership offers many valuable opportunities for our pupils and supports some of our other activities already in place which promote our children's global awareness.

This partnership will build upon the positive outcomes already secured from links established with schools in Norway, Slovenia and Poland.
