"Work hard, aim high, share and care"

March 08

All of our wonderful daffodils are now flowering and the school looks wonderful.  The rear of the grounds are still a little muddy so please take care when walking to and from the top gate.We hope you all have a restful Easter break and look forward to seeing everyone safe and well on Tuesday 8th April.

February 08

Our school grounds are looking wonderful at the moment, full of daffodils.  We have planted over 1000 new native trees such as cherry, ash, birch, beech and oak.  The rear of our grounds now will blossom in spring so watch this space.

We would like to thank all the wonderful parents and helpers who gave up their valuable time with this venture.  Even though it was a muddy day, quite rainy and overcast, they still came along and dug with gusto!  So THANKYOU to everyone.

We are currently developing a sustainability plan for the use of the grounds which will give certain parts of the grounds time to repair themselves in the winter months.  If you have any ideas on improving our grounds then please let the school know (it may be that someone has a particular skill that they could share with us)

Once more we will keep everyone informed about the celebration Eco day when we will raise the Green flag.  We are only waiting for the weather to improve in order to put up the flag pole. So watch this space.

Our School Grounds project is almost finished!  We have planted lots of new plants and shrubs which really enhance our school grounds and make it a better place for everyone.

We will be holding our official opening of the school grounds on Wed 13th June at 2.30. Everyone is invited to come along and support all the hard work that has been done.  The opening will be closely followed by our wonderful summer fayre when we have many exciting stalls and activities for everyone.  Come along and join in the FUN!

May update

We only have very few things to complete in our school grounds for this part of the project to be finished.  There is to be musical instruments installed at the rear of the school and we have a number of new trees to be planted ( kindly donated by Mrs Ball)

Very shortly information will be released about the grand opening which will take place during late June.

As part of this exciting day we will have the siting of a carved wooden arch which will lead into the area.  This will have the name of our area on the design.  We now welcome children to submit ideas for the name of the area.  The name should be short and incorporate the word 'Coed', as a key feature.  Please send the completed form that your child brings home as soon as possible in order that the winning name be incorporated into the building of the arch.

April update

Our school grounds are almost completely finished. We have amazing tubes to crawl through and fantastic benches for us to sit on all around the area at the back of the school. The Woodland Walk has new paths and planters which the Eco Team will be buying plants and shrubs for very soon. We are going to have musical instruments and some stands of willow and bamboo to further make our grounds the very best in the whole of Swansea.During the month of June we will be having our official 'Grand Opening'  with fun and games for everyone.  Watch this space for further news of the great event! We will shortly be embarking on an exciting adventure to develop our school grounds, which include the 'Woodland Walk'

July Update

'Drainaid' in partnership with Dwr Cymru and Kelda Water, are undertaking excavation of the site to be terraced during the summer holidays. Following on from this initial work, Dwr Cymru will be liaising with Morrisons Construction to complete retaining walls and surfacing work. Following the school's successful bid for funding from Cydcoed, work outside this immediate area will be undetaken by Matt Carroll and his team who will be responsible for helping us move towards the second stage of our project beyond the area outside the infant classrooms.

September update

The regional director for Kelda Water is due to visit the site on Monday, 18th, in order to plan the next section of work.

October Update

Following considerable delays (all of which were beyond our control), we are thrilled to be able to record that,at long last,

work has begun on the first stage of our plans for the outside

area play area. Many thanks to Kelda Water (working in partnership with Drainsaid, Morrisons Construction and JR Contractors) for making this possible and for helping us drive forward our exciting plans.

November Update

The reception area has been completed except for the seeding of part of the area.  The children are really enjoying using the area and we are thrilled at it's completion.  The next stage of the school grounds project is landscaping and construction of the raised beds for classes to grow a wide variety of plants, fruit and vegetables. This has been started during the first week of November even though the weather has been terrible! We are now in the exciting phase of tree planting when each child will be able to 'Adopt a Tree' and plant it with the help of parents, relatives and friends.

Work has also begun improving the nursery outdoors with paths, planters and gated areas for the children to explore.  The Woodland Walk is also currently being further improved with a new seating station, renewed paths and seats in our Forest School base camp.

We look forward to using all our new facilities and thank all persons involved in helping us bring our dreams to fruition.

Tree Planting A Super Success!

Although the weather was dreadful on Tuesday and Wednesday 22 and 23 November, parents, children and helpers turned out in force to plant over 600 small native trees at the back of our school.

The Evening Post photographed the council helping and Newsround also filmed us digging in the mud.  It was fantastic that so many adults came along to lend a hand and we will monitor our trees over the following months. A BIG thankyou to everyone who helped out.

December Update

We are continuing to work hard on the grounds development at the rear of the school with tunnels and whisper tubes being built.  The nursery area is currently also being worked on and we will plant lots of lovely new shrubs and bulbs in our new planters after the holidays.  We will be looking for volunteers to help us so watch this space!

Everyone at Waunarlwydd Primary School wish to thank parents, helpers and children for all their enthusiasm in developing our school grounds.Welcome back to everyone in Waunarlwydd Primary School.  We will be completing areas of the school grounds development this term if the rain ever stops.  This will give us so many exciting opportunities for learning outdoors and having fun at the same time.   We are all looking forward to it's completion in the very near future.

February Update

Matt Carrol and his team are working hard and the work on both sites is nearing completion. Thanks to funding from Cyd Coed we can boast of an outdoor school learning area which must rank amongst the best in the country. We have requested some free cockle shells from a Penclawdd company. If our request is successful, the paths in the existing Woodland Walk will be repaired soon. We have decided not to proceed withour original idea for a bridge at the top end of the school. Instead, we are asking Matt to design and make an archway which will be placed at the entrance of the top walkway. We need to thinks of a name for this walkway which can then be carved into the wooden arch and so we are planning to run a competition for pupils to offer up their best ideas. A grand opening with surprise guset celebreties is planned for early summer!
